Childhood asthma in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. Since 1980, the number of people diagnosed with asthma has more than doubled-and the number continues to increase each year. This disease affects 1 out of 13 kids under 15, or 5.5 million. Asthma is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism -responsible for about 10 million missed days, roughly 2 million emergency room visits, and approximately 5000 deaths. And these statistics only account for known cases of asthma-many cases remain undiagnosed. Although there is no known cure for this disease, experts agree that there are a variety of ways to reduce the number of asthma attacks. The latest PSAs highlight some unexpected items that can trigger asthma attacks and simple ways to take care of these items so that they are safer for a child with asthma. The PSAs direct parents to call 1-866-NO-ATTACKS or visit www.noattacks.org to learn how to stop asthma attacks before they start. This campaign launched in March 2001, and includes PSAs of all media types in Spanish.

Question by gman: New Asthma Treatments?
I have had asthma since I was young. It comes and goes in varying degrees of severity. Sometimes there will be a long period where it doesn’t bother me at all. But for the last 5 months I have had asthma fairly constantly, and have to use an inhaler on a nearly daily basis. It is becoming increasingly frustrating. It has gotten to the point where I am thinking about seeing a doctor in hopes of some other form of relief (besides the inhaler).

I’ve been treated for asthma a few times before, multiple times with one of those breathing machines (forgot what it was called) and I was once prescribed (about 4 years ago) Fluticasone propionate which i took for about 1-2 months. However i ceased using it and now i only use the inhaler, as needed. (As needed, for me, basically means once in the middle of the night, about 1-3 times a day, and once before bed)

So now before i see a doctor, what sort of treatment should i be on the lookout for? I imagine there are quite a few new ways i can get treated. If there are some that I should ask my doctor about, or should try, that would be great. I am 16 years old, 5’11”, and around 130-40 pounds.

P.S. Why do they make Albuterol inhalers different now? They used to come in a large canister in a gray tube, but now they are smaller and in red tubes, and these new ones are always getting clogged up and blocked, and its a real pain to have to clean out an inhaler when I need to use it RIGHT NOW, you know?

Best answer:

Answer by Nah Z
Inhalers are in new containers because laws were passed banning the old inhalers which damaged the environment. Basically, it was an excuse to get proprietary HFA inhalers on the market, and to squeeze generic inhalers out of business, with “saving the environment” as the excuse to ban something which creates much less harmful emissions than many much more voluntary practices- like driving a car!

Asthma is a chronic illness. Even when you feel well, you do not sound like an appropriate patient to be off a long-acting controller medicine. Long-acting controller medicines will help prevent the permanent lung changes associated with chronic asthma and asthma attacks.

Staying on a long-acting controller, even after your symptoms improve, is a strong factor in how well you’re going to be doing with your lungs ten years down the road.

Officially, most medication manufacturers have to say that there isn’t authorization to use long-acting inhalers when you could be potentially leaned off them, but the latest research (which the FDA politely ignores) clearly shows that remaining on a long-acting inhaler means having better outcomes years down the line.

Find a long acting medicine (like advair) that works for you, and STICK TO IT even when you start to feel better: your lungs will thank you for it.

Question by *babydoll*: How can I better my alertness and looks on days when taking multiple allergy/asthma medications?
Coz I can hardly get a thought out sometimes coz it makes me so drowsy, and it shows. People who know me know I’m sick with allergies on those days, but people I don’t know, who might say, want to take a job application from me, have no idea I’m not always searching so hard for my words or swollen and stuff.
Everyday I take prescription Claritin, Nasonex, Singulair (night), Advair, and an albuterol inhaler. On bad days I also have to use Benadryl. The days I have to use it, it shows, coz usually not only am I puffy and stuffy sounding, but it makes me sleepy. Thanks! Trying to avoid stimulants, but it looks like I’ll have to go back to drinking cappucino after all. That’s going to wreck my diet….

Question by : Army Childhood asthma?
Hi i am thinking about joining the army. One thing that is stopping me is that i was diagnosed with childhood asthma. I was going to join ROTC and had to get my medical records for asthma and the last record of it was when i was 13.5. Is it possible to get a waiver for this? I am physically fit and can run 2 miles in 12:30. Thanks for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by tator
Yes it is possible to get a waiver. Depends on what kind of recruiter you have. Mine decided to get a waiver even though I didn’t have asthma since I was 8. Other recruiters I talked to said I would have to worry about it. You could always have a doctor write off saying the asthma is inactive now and has been gone since you were 13.

What do you think? Answer below!
